Additional Diesel Retrofit Projects

Listed below are more of the Maryland Department of the Environment’s diesel retrofit projects. Please click on a project title to see detailed information.

Clean Cities (US DOE) Grant to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA)

  • Funding: $65,000 was provided by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA).
  • Technology and Scope: Install Clever Devices BusLink Switches on 64 Neoplan transit buses in order to reduce bus idling. It is estimated that MTA’s fleet of 822 diesel-fueled buses idled more than 2,250,000 hours and consumed more than 2,800,000 gallons of diesel fuel in 2003.
  • Status: Completed in October 2006.
  • Annual Emissions Reduction: 63.62 tons of CO, 5.34 tons of HC, 0.19 tons of PM, and 16.42 tons of NOx.

The pilot project went well and MTA installed Clever Devices BusLink Switches on an additional 295 buses, for a total of almost 400 buses (model year 1994 and newer).

  • Funding: Approximately $295,000 was spent by MTA.
  • Technology and Scope: Install Clever Devices BusLink Switches on 295 Neoplan transit buses in order to reduce bus idling.
  • Status: Completed in October 2006.
  • Annual Emissions Reduction: 293.25 tons of CO, 24.60 tons of HC, 0.89 tons of PM, and 75.68 tons of NOx.

National Clean Diesel Campaign

This project will involve retrofitting 3 to 5 off-road vehicles with diesel particulate filters and will demonstrate and evaluate the feasibility of using on-road diesel retrofit technology on off-road vehicles. It is anticipated to occur in 2008.
