Pollution Prevention Intern Program
The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Maryland Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MD MEP) have partnered to place engineering students as summer interns at seventeen Maryland companies since 2000. Participating companies have included metal finishers, printers, and a variety of manufacturing facilities. These projects are supported by a combination of funding from the U.S. EPA, MDE, and the participating companies. The students work closely with MD MEP staff to identify process and equipment improvements that will save the company money and reduce its environmental impact.
In total, the interns have identified over $3.5 million in costs savings through energy efficiency, waste reduction, material use efficiency and other environmentally beneficial practices.
