COMAR Amendment Review on Universal Waste Rule Implementation

Universal Waste Rule Implementation

MDE finalizes amendments to COMAR 26.13

Effective 05/01/08, MDE finalized amendments to COMAR 26.13 implementing EPA's Universal Waste Rule.  The regulation encourages the collection and recycling of 5 categories of hazardous waste that have been identified as "Universal Wastes" (lamps, including fluorescent lamps; batteries; pesticides that are part of a recall or collection program; mercury-containing equipment; and fluorescent light ballasts that contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).  The regulation provides alternative management standards for these wastes so that they are not subject to the full range of the hazardous waste regulations.
