Marcellus Shale Safe Drilling Initiative Advisory Commission

The Marcellus Shale Safe Drilling Initiative will assist State policymakers and regulators in determining whether and how gas production from the Marcellus shale in Maryland can be accomplished without unacceptable risks of adverse impacts to public health, safety, the environment and natural resources.  The initiative is administered jointly by the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Department of Natural Resouces. 


 The members of an Advisory Commission include:


David Vanko, Ph.D., a geologist and current Dean of The Jess and Mildred Fisher College of Science and Mathematics at Towson University


State Senator George C. Edwards (Allegany and Garrett Counties and parts of Washington County)

State Delegate Heather R. Mizeur (Montgomery County)

Garrett County Commissioner James M. Raley

Allegany Commissioner William R. Valentine

Oakland Mayor Peggy Jamison

Shawn Bender, division manager at the Beitzel Corporation and president of the Garrett County Farm Bureau

Ann Bristow, Ph.D., Savage River Watershed Association

Stephen M. Bunker, director of Conservation Programs, Maryland Office of the Nature Conservancy

Jeffrey Kupfer, senior advisor, Chevron Government Affairs
