Final Determination Issued

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has made a final determination to reissue the General Permit for Discharges from Surface Coal Mines and Related Facilities. The Department held a public hearing concerning the tentative determination on Wednesday, June 19, 2013. The comment period for the tentative determination closed on June 26, 2013. In response to all comments received during the comment period, the Department has issued a final determination.

Important Announcements

  • The new permit will be effective on May 1, 2014.
  • To maintain continuous coverage, complete renewal applications for coverage are due by June 29, 2014 (60 days after the effective date). To be considered complete, applications must include a completely filled-in Notice of Intent (NOI), the requisite fee and a site map. Since June 29, 2013, happens to be a Sunday, complete applications postmarked with a date as late as June 29, 2014, are acceptable for maintaining continuous coverage.
