Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 1, 1999) – The Maryland Board of Public Works today approved a $250,000 grant for the construction of improvements to the existing water treatment plant in the Town of Pittsville, Wicomico County.

"Water is one of our most precious resources, and we have an obligation to ensure that every community has an adequate and healthy water supply," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "By constructing the upgrades to this water system, we are making a long-term investment to ensure that current and future Pittsville residents have access to safe and clean drinking water."

The raw water supply currently contains high concentrations of iron, which the existing water treatment system is not capable to completely remove at peak water demands. The upgrade project will include the construction of a new clarifier to improve iron removal capability.

An additional $50,000 grant will be provided by Wicomico County.

"This project will allow the Town to provide iron free and safe drinking water to its residents," said Wicomico County Board of Commissioners President David A. Fitzgerald.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
