Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 17, 1997) -- A project to restore the severely eroded Weems Creek tributary system in Anne Arundel County will receive State assistance thanks to a Board of Public Works State grant of $160,000.

Chaired by Governor Parris N. Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.

"This project will stabilize the Weems Creek tributary system that will reduce nutrients and other pollutants from stormwater runoff and greatly enhance the in-stream and downstream wetlands," said Governor Glendening. "This action also will improve the habitat and ultimately have a beneficial impact on the Chesapeake Bay."

In addition to the State grant, Anne Arundel County is contributing $428,000 for a total project cost of $588,000. Planning began in June 1996. Construction will begin in June 1998 and will be completed by October 1998.

"Weems Creek is a vital tributary to Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis," said County Executive John Gary. "I am pleased the County and State can work together to preserve it. Because of its importance to the Bay, all of our citizens will benefit."
