Press Release

BALTIMORE, MD (November 4, 2003) – Maryland’s Department of the Environment (MDE) continues its commitment to customer service excellence and outreach with introduction of the 2003 Business Guide to Environmental Permits and Approvals.

Updated from its 1998 edition, the guide contains the latest in permit turnaround times, fees, a new telephone directory including MDE field office numbers and a Customer Response Form.

"The 88-page guide is a useful reference for everyone, but is an essential tool for those seeking a permit or license from MDE or information on the state’s environmental regulatory process," said Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

The agency publication simply explains the requirements of each permit, offers a one-page description of each permit’s purpose and gives an overview of the wide range of activities the agency is mandated to administer under law.

"The guide is a consolidated source of information for all the various types of permits and licenses the agency issues," said MDE Acting Secretary Kendl P. Philbrick. "This publication is a part of our ever expanding effort to provide stellar customer service that is easy to understand and implement."

The Permit Guide, as the booklet is typically known, will be available for use and view at all public libraries in the state, local chambers of commerce, local economic development offices, Small Business Development Centers and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development. The 2003 Business Guide to Environmental Permits and Approvals can also be viewed online at: www.mde.state.md.us/Permits/busGuide.asp. Copies of the guide may also be obtained by calling (800) 633-6101 ext. 3772.

MDE’s mission is to protect and restore the quality of Maryland's air, water, and land resources. The department works to ensure achievement of the state's environmental goals while fostering economic development, safe communities, and environmental education.
