Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 28, 2004) – Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. announced Board of Public Works approval today of a $200,000 grant for the Town of Federalsburg (Caroline County) to cleanup and improve Marshyhope Creek.

“This project is necessary to prevent further erosion of the shoreline adjacent to Federalsburg’s Main Street while reducing sedimentation and non-point source pollution into the creek,” Governor Ehrlich said. “The improvements will ultimately encourage spawning areas for fish and create wildlife habitat.”

The project at Marshyhope will consist of rehabilitation of the shoreline adjacent to North and South Main Street to reduce erosion and create marsh habitat. The project will be completed in several phases of approximately 500 to 1,000 feet per year along the shoreline.

“The mayor and town council wish to thank the state for continuing to support our efforts to improve Marshyhope Creek,” said Federalsburg Mayor Betty J. Ballas. “For the past 13 years, the town has been actively involved in trying to improve the water quality of Marshyhope Creek. By cleaning up Marshyhope Creek, we will improve the quality of life of Federalsburg and citizens throughout the communities of the Chesapeake Bay.”

Total cost of the project is $1 million, of which $250,000 over the course of the seven-year project will be the local cost. The remainder will be filled with state contributions. Work on the long-term, phased project is expected to begin this month.
