Maryland Green Registry Seeks Nominations for Annual Leadership Awards Applications due April 29, 2011

(Annapolis, Maryland) April 18, 2011 – The Maryland Green Registry, a voluntary program launched by Governor O’Malley in June 2009 to promote and recognize sustainable practices by organizations throughout the state, is now accepting applications for the program’s annual Leadership Awards.

Maryland Green Registry members are encouraged to submit a statement highlighting one or more of the environmental projects or practices described in their online profile and the results they achieved. Statements are due April 29, 2011, and further information can be found on the Maryland Green Registry website at www.green.maryland.gov/registry

Governor O’Malley said, “More than 270 organizations, ranging from large manufacturers to small businesses and nonprofits, are members of the Maryland Green Registry. Last year, these organizations reported over $24 million in savings from the smart, sustainable practices they implemented. These annual Leadership Awards provide an opportunity to highlight the innovative environmental practices and successes of our Maryland Green Registry members and inspire others to take similar steps to protect our air and water, while saving money and creating a healthier workplace.”

Applicants must be members of the Maryland Green Registry. To join the free program, Maryland organizations should visit the program's website at www.green.maryland.gov/registry and complete a best practices profile. The website includes tips and resources in the areas of environmental management and leadership; waste reduction; energy and water conservation; transportation; and green building design. This information offers numerous examples of activities to be included in the organization’s profile, as well as ideas for future efforts.

The 2011 Maryland Green Registry Leadership Award winners will be announced at the annual awards and membership event on June 7, 2011, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the EnviroCenter in Jessup.

Last year’s Green Registry Leadership Awards went to British American Auto Care, Inc., GM Baltimore Transmission Plant, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and Union Hospital of Cecil County.

The Maryland Green Registry is a part of Smart, Green & Growing, an initiative introduced by Governor Martin O’Malley in October 2008, to foster a smarter, greener, more sustainable future for Maryland families. The Initiative brings together state agencies, local governments, businesses and citizens to revitalize communities, improve transit, create green jobs, address climate change, conserve energy, preserve land, and restore the Chesapeake Bay.
