Who

MDE officials, including Deputy Secretary Robert Summers Crellin Elementary School principal Dana McCauley, Crellin Elementary students

What

Celebration marking the installation of the Crellin Laurel Run lime doser, which significantly reduces the effects of acid main drainage to improve water quality for aquatic life. The doser is the result of a joint effort involving MDE’s Mining Program and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, along with the Youghiogheny River Watershed Association and the Resource Conservation and Development Council of Western Maryland. The doser is a structure that allows for a prescribed amount of alkaline material to be added to the water to offset the effects of acid mine drainage. The event will include tours of the doser area, where Crellin Elementary School students will conduct water sampling. The event also includes tours of Crellin Elementary School’s award-winning Environmental Education Lab, an outdoor classroom created as part of the reclaiming of a coal transfer station.
