ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 3, 2001) -- The Maryland Board of Public Works approved a $500,000 grant increase yesterday for Queen Anne’s County to continue with work to upgrade and expand the existing Centreville Wastewater Treatment Plant.
"This funding increases the state’s contribution toward this project to more than $2.5 million a figure that clearly demonstrates our long standing commitment to provide Marylanders with the best public services while helping improve our environment at the same time," said Governor Parris. N. Glendening.
The project upgrade to Centreville’s existing wastewater treatment plant includes the construction of a biological nutrient removal (BNR) facility to improve the plant’s ability to remove nitrogen from treated water.
City officials are hoping the grant from the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) will assist in reducing the amount of nutrients being discharged into the Corsica River and the Chesapeake Bay to meet the regional nutrient reduction goal of 40 percent. The project will also include seasonal use of land application of treated wastewater through spray irrigation.
Today, Centreville Mayor Council President Jeremiah R. Schram applauded the on-going support of the wastewater expansion project.
"As a small town located at the headwaters of the Corsica River, we are aware of the importance of Centreville’s role in improving the water quality of the Bay," Barker said. "Upgrading of the town’s wastewater treatment facility to a BNR facility is an important step."
The total cost of the project is more than $7 million of which $4.5 million is the local share. Construction on the upgrade is set to begin Aug. 15 and is scheduled for completion about a year later.
Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
