Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (November 29, 2000) – Three communities in Allegany County will have new water towers built for their recently completed public water systems, thanks to a $388,000 grant approved today by the Maryland Board of Public Works.

"Safe drinking water is essentials to the general public health of our State," said Lt. Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. "Public water systems were recently completed in these three communities to correct water supply problems and health concerns. It is imperative that Maryland’s citizens have the best water possible."

The project includes the construction of water storage tanks serving the Carlos-Shaft, Vale Summit and Oldtown Road communities, each supported by separate water distribution systems. A total of 500 homes will benefit from these storage tanks. The project will also receive $400,000 in local funds.

"Allegany County is pleased to receive funding assistance for the water tanks project," said county Director of Public Works W. Stephen Young. "This project will provide individual water storage tanks to increase the reliability as well as meet the peak demand and fire protection needs of our water distribution systems. We sincerely appreciate the State’s on-going assistance in improving water supply throughout Allegany County."

Chaired by Governor Parris N. Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
