Board of Public Works Approves Grant To Help Carroll County Purchase Flood Prone Property in Detour Community

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 27, 1999) –– A flood mitigation project to purchase a flood-prone former auto salvage yard and restore the property to open space in Detour, Carroll County, was approved for funding today by the Maryland Board of Public Works.

"Flooding has devastated the Detour community in the past, ravaging homes and businesses, and wreaking havoc on the environment," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "By helping Carroll County purchase, clear, and restore this flood-prone property to open space, we will help preserve our environment and protect families in the Detour community from more flooding damage in the future."

A $75,000 grant from the State’s Comprehensive Flood Management Grant Program, along with $25,000 from Carroll County, will be used to purchase, clean up, re-grade and seed the property. The cleared and restored flood plain area will help prevent the rise of floodwaters during massive rainstorms, and eliminate the environmental and public health problems caused by floating debris in the town. In addition, the filtration of runoff through open land and vegetation will dramatically improve local water quality.

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Treasurer Richard N. Dixon and Comptroller William Donald Schaefer. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve major construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
