Governor’s Press Release

ANNAPOLIS, MD (August 5, 1998) -- A project to design and construct a sewer system to serve 84 homes in the Jennings community in Garrett County will receive State assistance thanks to Board of Public Works approval today of a $749,739 grant. The sewage collected from Jennings will be conveyed to the Grantsville Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment and discharge.

"These improvements will eliminate the potential health problems associated with failing septic systems," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "It also will eliminate the discharge of raw wastewater into the Cassellman River."

In addition to the State grant, the project is receiving $558,000 in federal grants and the Garrett County Sanitary District is contributing $130,000. Construction is expected to begin in August 1998 and completed in August 1999.

"Garrett County is very fortunate to receive such generous financial aid from the federal and State governments for the Jennings Sewer Project," said R. Lamont Pagenhardt, County Administrator. "Without financial aid, the project would not be affordable for the users and the environment would continue to suffer. The new collection system will eliminate failing septic systems and raw sewage discharges in the community."

Chaired by Governor Glendening, the Board of Public Works also is comprised of Comptroller Robert Swann and Treasurer Richard N. Dixon. The Board is empowered by the General Assembly to approve construction and consultant contracts, equipment purchases, property transactions and other procurement actions.
