Press Release

IJAMSVILLE, MD (October 31, 2003) – Frederick County students and teachers will join Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) Acting Secretary Kendl P. Philbrick and Assistant Secretary Stuart W. Wilkins to test local waterways 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4 at Oakdale Elementary School [located at 9850 Old National Pike] in Ijamsville. The effort is part of MDE’s continuous environmental education and stewardship initiative.

MDE recently provided schools across the state with simple water quality monitoring kits containing 50 sets of tests that students can use to gather data on four important measures of water quality – dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, and clarity. By participating, Maryland students receive a hands-on experience in assessing the condition of their local environment – especially in light of impact of Hurricane Isabel. Students will also be using some of the same basic tests that MDE uses to develop objective information needed for the assessment, protection, and restoration of Maryland’s waters.
