Governor Glendening Announces Somerset County Grant Increase

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 27, 2002) – Governor Parris N. Glendening today announced Maryland Board of Public Works approval of a $247,935 grant increase for Somerset County to continue work to upgrade and expand the existing Princess Anne Wastewater Treatment Plant.

““Improving the quality of service to Marylanders while at the same time protecting and strengthening the State’s natural resources is a top priority,” said Governor Glendening. “This grant will allow 5,000 residents on Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore to enjoy better quality of services, while the city of Princess Anne reduces the levels of nutrients flowing into the Manokin River.”

The project upgrade to Princess Anne’s existing wastewater treatment plant includes the construction of a biological nutrient removal (BNR) facility to improve the plant’s ability to remove nitrogen from treated water. Improvements to the existing 1.26 million gallon-per-day plant will be capable of removing total nitrogen to a seasonal average of 3 milligrams per liter.

“The Princess Anne Wastewater Treatment Plant was recognized during the 1980s as one of the early major wastewater plants to remove nutrients. We recognized early the benefits of the BNR Program and executed a BNR agreement in October 1985,” Princess Anne City Manager Robert C. Street Jr. said. “None of the above nutrient removal would be possible without the funding support we have received from the Maryland Department of the Environment.”

The total cost of the project is $4.67 million of which $195,590 is the local share. MDE previously awarded the city of Princess Anne $1.78 million in grants for this project. Construction on the upgrade began May 2001 and is slated for completion by July 25, 2002.
