Governor Glendening Announces Lanaconing Awarded Grant Increase for Expansion At City Water System

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 27, 2002) – Governor Parris N. Glendening today announced Maryland Board of Public Works approval of a $1.3 million grant increase for the city of Lonaconing to continue work to upgrade and expand the existing Gilmore/Warnick Road Water Project.

“Residents currently obtain their water from springs and wells, which often provide water that is poor in quality and inconsistent in quantity,” said Governor Parris. N. Glendening. “This project will improve the quality and efficiency of the service by providing safe drinking water to the residents from Lonaconing’s water system.”

The project upgrade to Lonaconing’s water system includes the construction of a 50 gallon-per-minute water booster pumping station that will transport drinking water to a 10,000-gallon storage tank. A new iron water line will also be installed to provide a dependable source of drinking water to about 30 residents in the Warnick Road area who are currently dependent on well water.

“The Warnick Road Water Project is a good example of how the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) helps a community solve their water problems. The financial support provided by MDE makes it possible for the people in the Warnick Road area to have a chlorinated, upgraded water system with a good potable water supply,” said Lonaconing Mayor John W. Coburn Jr. “We want to take this opportunity to thank MDE for the all of the help they have given us with our water problems.”

The total cost of the project is $250,000 of which $150,000 has come from the Bureau of Mines. Construction on the upgrade will begin May 2002 and is slated for completion by October 2002.
