Governor Glendening Announces Dorchester County Grant Increase

ANNAPOLIS, MD (February 27, 2002) – Governor Parris N. Glendening today announced Board of Public Works approval of a $1.3 million grant increase for Dorchester County to continue work to upgrade and expand the existing Hurlock Wastewater Treatment Plant.

“Improving the quality of service to Marylanders while at the same time protecting and strengthening the State’s natural resources is a top priority,” said Governor Parris. N. Glendening. “Nutrient removal at the Hurlock Wastewater Treatment Plant is essential to 3,400 residents serviced by the plant. It is also crucial to the success of Maryland’s effort to achieve a 40 percent reduction in the amount of nutrients being discharged into the Chesapeake Bay.”

The project upgrade to Havre De Grace’s existing wastewater treatment plant includes the planning, design and construction of facilities to upgrade the existing 2.0 million gallons per day plant to achieve biological nutrient removal (BNR). The modifications also include alterations to the city’s existing lagoon system and purchase of land for spray irrigation.

“The town of Hurlock is very grateful for the funding by the Board of Public Works for its BNR project. Officials from the Maryland Department of the Environment have been very helpful in working with Hurlock’s future wastewater needs to ensure cost effective improvement that will benefit business, industry and residential community to improve water quality on the Eastern Shore,” said Hurlock Mayor Don William Bradley.

The total cost of the project is $4.6 million of which $2.3 million is the local share. MDE previously awarded the city of Havre De Grace a $1 million in grants for this project. Construction on the upgrade will begin March 2003 and is slated for completion by June 2004.
