Governor Announces Funding to Upgrade Elkton Facility

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 18, 2006) – Governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. announced today Board of Public Works approval of a loan up to $15.7 million and an $800,000 grant to upgrade the Elkton Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Board is comprised of Governor Ehrlich, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp and Comptroller William D. Schaefer.

“My Administration is fully committed to protecting the Chesapeake Bay. Installing additional nutrient removal technology at the Elkton Wastewater Treatment Plant is essential for the success of Maryland’s efforts to achieve a 40 percent reduction in the amount of nutrients discharged to the Chesapeake Bay,” said Governor Ehrlich. “This grant helps Maryland meet its commitment under the Chesapeake Bay 2000 Agreement. Projects like this have a lasting impact on this state and the legacy we leave to future generations.”

The $800,000 Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) grant and the $15.7 million loan from the Water Quality State Revolving Loan Fund, in addition to the $11 million in previously approved Bay Restoration Fund and BNR grants will be used for planning, design and construction of BNR and Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) technology at the Elkton Wastewater Treatment Plant. After this project is complete, effluent concentration goals of to 3 milligrams per liter, for Total Nitrogen and 0.3 milligram per liter for Total Phosphorous will be reached. The Elkton Wastewater Treatment Plant project will expand capacity from 2.7 million gallons per day (mgd) to 3.2 mgd.

“We are strongly committed to our biological nutrient removal project at the Elkton Wastewater Treatment Plant and look to the continuing success of our relationship with Maryland’s Department of the Environment to achieve our goal of protecting one of Maryland’s most precious resources,” said Mayor Joseph L Fisona, Town of Elkton.
