Final TMDLs Approved by EPA: Severn River

The Severn River is located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. The Severn River is approximately 12.5 miles in length, with a watershed area of approximately 43,985 acres (178 square kilometers).

Maryland water quality standards specify that all surface waters of the State shall be protected for water contact recreation, fishing, and protection of aquatic life and wildlife. The designated use of the Severn River (Basin Code: 02131002) is Use II- Support of Estuarine and Marine Aquatic Life and Shellfish Harvesting. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) has identified the waters of the Severn River (Integrated Report Assessment Unit ID: SEVMH-02131002) on the State's 2014 Integrated Report as impaired by nutrients (nitrogen & phosphorus) (1996), sediments (1996), fecal coliform in tidal portions of the basin (1996), and PCBs in fish tissue (2006).

The fecal coliform TMDLs for the restricted areas in the Severn River watershed were approved by the EPA in 2006. The Chesapeake Bay nutrient and sediment TMDLs, which were approved by the EPA in December 2010, has addressed the nutrient and sediment impairment listings for the Severn River.

The document, available below, establishes a total PCB (tPCB) TMDL for the tidal waters of the Severn River, for which a data solicitation was conducted, and all readily available data from the past 5 years have been considered.
