WQA of Sedimentation fro Piney Run Reservoir, Carroll County, MD

Water Quality Analyses (WQA) with EPA Concurrence of MDE's Findings:  Piney Run Reservoir

Piney Run Reservoir is an impoundment located near Eldersburg in Carroll County, Maryland.  The impoundment, which is owned by Carroll County, lies on Piney Run, a tributary of the South Branch Patapsco River.

Piney Run Reservoir in the South Branch Patapsco River watershed (basin number 02130908) was identified on Maryland’s 1998 303(d) list of water quality limited segments (WQLSs) as being impaired by nutrients and sediments.  The sediment listing was prompted by a Lake Management Survey in Piney Run Reservoir (Maryland Department of Environment [MDE], 1994).  The listing of Piney Run Reservoir as impaired by sediments resulted from a survey recommendation in the Maryland Lake Management Survey Report (1994) suggesting the implementation of shore erosion controls without any actual evidence of biological impacts or loss of recreational use.   The report below provides an updated interpretation of the 1994 questionnaire that supports the removal of Piney Run Reservoir from the 303(d) list when it is revised.   A water quality anlysis was completed to address the nutrient impairment in 2004.
