60. Eastern Neck Training Project

Introduction

As a component of a Scheduled Interagency Wetlands Training course, 1.5 acres of emergent wetland were constructed at Eastern Neck Island. This siteis located in the Lower Chester River (02-13-05-05) watershed of Kent County.

Construction

This site was constructed and planted in 2004.  This project demonstrated design, engineering and construction techniques, including the use of heavy equipment to a group of wetland professionals from various agencies and backgrounds.

Status

This wetland was originally planned to be larger than one and a half acres, but it appears that some of the site is now being farmed due to lack of hydrology.  The one and a half acres that are not being farmed also had some portions that appeared too dry.  MDE scored the "undisturbed" portion in 2009 using the newly developed Mitigation Site Scoring Method.  The site received the low score of 68/100 partially due to lack of hydrology in sections and a lower than desired amount of native wetland species.  With this being said, the site still provides some valuable wetland functions including a water quality improvement, education, and wildlife habitat.

This site is open to the public and is adjacent to a walking trail.  Click on this link to see an aerial photo and directions.
